Curse you LDAP! and a Hungry Sysadmin Later ...
So I am working on adding additional class of users to my Active Directory network, and I found out through frustration that the traditional methods of external applications can be affected by how Microsoft Active Directory works with LDAP.  Let me explain. Most LDAP authentication methods for remote applications allow for the MemberOf attibute of users to signify which groups they are in.  This...

Good Quality Software and Motorcycles?
I found a paragraph in a book recently that made me pause and think about what makes good software.  The book in question is the Art and Zen of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig, it is a classic book and I recommend people who think of themselves as an analytic thinker read it. The book’s subtitle “An Inquiry Into Values” gives you the four word insight into what it is...

Good Sysadmins Don't Like Magic
My twist on @AlexTatiyants blog post on Magic Programming.  I know I’m replacing Dev with Sysadmin, but I hope this is flattering.   Overall this is a personal view that I struggle to convey with my other technical colleagues, and sometimes they discount my views because I am “Overteching it.” Good Sysadmins don’t like magic.  They want to understand exactly what’s...

Windows 7 Cant Click and Drag
Cant click and drag files in Windows Explorer?  Make sure you have a explorer window selected and hit [ESC] on your keyboard.   I did this to myself while dragging files for attachment in a Mozilla Thunderbird email window.  Maddening. I guess the click-and-drag handler got lost somewhere.  [ESC] fixes it.

ilopez.com may go down for awhile
Reason? I’m migrating my domain registration away from godaddy to something that reddit approves.  Right now, this is about what I can do to “vote with my wallet” to oppose SOPA.  Curious about what SOPA is? Google it, you will find more articulate and concise blogs/research/news-articles about the topic that I could ever string together.

Why I like structured and programmatic music.
At some point in recent history someone thought Baby Einstein was a good idea.  A torrent of bright colorful video and classical sounds to soothe babies into a trance? I have doubts whether this actually works.   I think it is just a way for parents to let the tv babysit their kids under the cover of ‘they are learning.’ But the idea has some kind of basis.  Isnt music, inherently...

Adventures in Scala... sum.java
Well I just started this little jaunt into Scala.  The book I got through Amazon (Kindle App) is “Beginning Scala” by David Pollak.  I spoke with David when discussing whether Lift was a good fit for a project I have.  Now I am reading his book. The book was written for an earlier version of Scala. Namely; Scala 2.7.8.  I am using it under 2.8.0.  There are some differences in how...

Problems with Live@edu - Saddleback.edu
So these last few days I have been trying to figure out why emails sent to my @saddleback.edu account were being forwarded instead of redelivered to my @ilopez.com address. I got some clarity today.  It appears that on the initial May 2010 conversion to the Microsoft Hosted Live@edu service; the admin/contactor that created the default account AND the forwarding rules used the...

Education My Way...
With the recent news of my 2006 High School compatriots completing their first round of higher education; I cant help but feel a little behind.  Sure if you just use ‘completed first undergrad degree’ as a metric, then by that measure I am behind. However feeling inadequate would be minimizing my accomplishments from the last few years since that energetic release from the clutches of...

Notes & Bonds
Just wached an video on bonds & long-term notes, made in 1997… where was I in 1997? I was in 5th Grade, surfing the interwebs at school. It is so weird to see content for higher education made when I was very young, exported to VHS, digitized later from VHS, converted to QuickTime MOV format, made available online, where I then purchased an online license to access such content for...

Did you miss the bus?
Beep. Beep.  All aboard! The website move bus! So I decided it was time to make a change from from the Wordpress platform to a Tumblr.com platform.  Hopefully this will enable me to write more! You may have a few days where the old site will appear, but this should be the platform for here on out.  Its quite nice.
